"shoujo" is actually the correct romanization:
少女=しょじょ=shoujo
If you write 'shojo', you get 処女 for example, which means "virgin/maiden". 少女 has the meanings "young lady; little girl; virgin; maiden; daughter". In the manga context, it should be 少女 and then the meaning of 'young lady/little girl'.
I think the reason many people write 'shojo' instead of 'shoujo', is that 'ou' is pronounced as a long 'o' and in some romanization systems, 'ou' is romanized as an o with a bar on top of it. If you then cannot type the o with a bar on top, you just write is as 'o'.
